![]() When infrastructures are truncated, stripped down, or set aside in the wake of wartime destruction, geopolitics, or through the impact of economic decline and state disinvestment, these abandoned spaces emerge as laboratorial fields for the independent dynamics of nonhuman life. More recent stories from Berlin include the discovery of South African ragwort ( Senecio inaequidens), a plant that moved along railways and waterways and now flourishes in a Berlin parking lot (Seitz, 2020: 298) and the route via train from France of a cave spider ( Nesticus eremita) that found a habitat in an abandoned railway yard (Zerbe, 2019: 437). In their celebration of new arrivals, these early twentieth-century botanical studies allude to questions of belonging of these “accidental migrants”, at a time when other strands in German vegetation science such as plant sociology developed nativist and ideologically charged conceptions of nature and its relation to place (Gröning and Wolschke-Bulmahn, 1992). Bonte wondered which of these new arrivals would withstand, adapt, and someday acquire Bürgerrecht (citizenship) in the region (Bonte 1930: 8). ![]() The botanist Ludwig Bonte speculated about the accidental journeys each of these plants might have taken across the globe as a by-product of modernity’s circulating commodities. Between 19 over 700 new arrivals were discovered in Germany’s industrial Ruhr area. These “infrastructural floras” show how plants flourished in spaces of intense human disturbance. In the early 1900s, for example, scientists and amateurs created inventories of new arrivals that they termed Adventivflora (adventive flora) by botanizing the railways, canals, harbors, and industrial installations in Europe’s urbanizing regions. Explorations of the botanical city provide a window into the interconnected histories of infrastructure and nonhuman life (Gandy and Jasper, 2020). Now and again nonhuman agency becomes visible in the historical records of modernity’s vital networks, the moment it disrupts the flows of metabolic systems. Nonhuman life gathers alongside infrastructure networks, sometimes in unexpected ways and outside the parameters of capitalist space and time. The occluded histories of nonhuman life still have to be recovered from the archives of engineered landscapes. Infrastructure not only moves humans, it is a more-than-human project. They exemplify how nonhuman life repurposes infrastructural environments, both along and against the grain of their intended use. Many airfields across the world-active and abandoned-are migratory stopovers, foraging and nesting sites for birds and other species. Various urban biotopes provide ecological niches for rare and endangered insects, spiders, reptiles, and birds that used to be common in rural landscapes before the advent of industrialized farming. ![]() Currently Berlin’s largest Stadtbrache (urban wasteland), this 300 hectare field is marked by decades of infrastructural use and weathering: the tarmac is covered by lichens ruderal plants grow in the cracks of former service roads. ![]() In Berlin, skylarks have found a refugium between the runways of the former Tempelhof airport. ![]() ![]() Having run several Irish motorway service areas like this, and many petrol stations in the UK, Applegreen took over Welcome Break in 2018 and prepared to introduce the same prophecy with them. In July 2020, Applegreen sold fuel for 24.7 cent per litre in a promotion at some of their Irish motorway service areas. In fact on one occasion Applegreen were told to raise their prices because the queue was disrupting the motorway. Their entire business model assumes people will drive a long way to find cheap petrol, so when they founded their business in Ireland they heavily promoted their low fuel prices, hoping that customers would stop to buy more food from them in return. One name may be able to shake things up completely: Applegreen. Two high profile examples were Washington and Southwaite, as well as the 1996 Esso 'price watch' campaign. Over the years, several individual service areas have trialled selling fuel at a cheaper price, but they have quickly reverted to their standard pricing structure. Highway authorities have explicitly ruled out taking action against service areas with seemingly excessive fuel prices.Īway from the motorway, rural petrol stations usually look at other fuel prices within a 30 mile radius before setting their own, paying particular attention to what's charged further along the same road.Īdvertising at Welcome Break's new petrol stations. Petrol stations are not required to advertise their fuel price, but it is common practice that they do, if only to avoid disappointment at the pumps. Some business fuel cards even charge a flat rate across the country, irrespective of the advertised price.Ĭomplaints about motorway fuel prices were common as early as the 1970s, but a government study found that the prices were not unduly high and that some of the associated offers made for good value. This leads to motorists accusing the forecourt of taking advantage of a captive market. In practice, a lot of customers of motorway petrol stations are charging the price to their employer, so they are not worried about the bill. Regulations also made it difficult for them to cross-subsidise because motorway service areas are supposed to be competing with each other and not with neighbouring towns. ![]() This is fine for a business which is able to subsidise it, but traditionally motorway services were run on tight profit margins with high running costs. The cheap fuel that is sold in supermarkets makes very little profit, if any. Operators have been reluctant to comment on why their prices are so high, occasionally muttering about high operation costs or pressure from the forecourt brand. Newspaper articles frequently point out that as much as 20p per litre can be saved by driving a few miles. Petrol stations on motorways and major roads frequently receive complaints that they charge prices well above the prices charged locally, especially when compared with supermarkets. Most people still describe the facilities as 'petrol stations', with official terms like 'filling station' or 'forecourt' (which actually describes the manoeuvring area) sounding a bit clinical. Within the industry, the phrase 'petrol station' is out of favour, because they sell a lot of diesel and alternative fuels too. This has created the unusual situation where the two neighbouring facilities are effectively competing with each other to sell food. As Moto and Roadchef wanted to focus on catering, they have since sold most of their forecourts to the likes of EG Group. At motorway services, it always used to be the operator. The petrol station is the only service area facility which you can be sure will be open at night, and it's normally the one thing people expect to find in a service area.Īlthough most petrol stations are supplied by one of the major oil companies, and covered in their branding, sometimes they are ran by somebody else. All signposted service areas (on motorways and on A-roads) are required to sell fuel, but rest areas are not. ![]() While petrol stations can be found all over the world, this page looks at their contribution to service areas. It's also colloquially known as a 'garage' or 'service station', though those phrases are also used to describe mechanics and service areas. For the current price of fuel, you need to consult the fuel brand in question.Ī petrol station, filling station, forecourt, PFS (petrol filling station), FFS (fuel filling station) are all phrases which effectively describe the same thing. ![]() ![]() ![]() The classic symbol in Polynesian Tattoos which often appears as a row of spearheads, representing warrior and masculine power. Agile estimating uses relative sizing to provide a realistic way for teams to forecast work. Luckily, people are good at comparing things. ![]() Unfortunately, humans are phenomenally bad at estimating and even worse when working in a complex domain like software development. When more is unknown than known, use relative sizing. But teams still need to estimate their work to forecast releases. The more ambiguous the requirement, the more difficult it is to calculate how long something will take. This intentionally incomplete plan works because they determine what is required through daily collaboration with the requestor during development. In an Agile approach, the developers only know enough to get started–they don’t know everything needed to complete an item. It’s a different approach than a traditional software lifecycle, but it is necessary. One of the reasons Agile frameworks work so well in complex domains, such as software development, is the balance of responding to change and getting something completed within specified, timeboxed iterations. Agile approaches continue to gain popularity because of the marketplace’s volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. I am swayed by irrelevant or misleading information, such as budget, so my estimate is biased.I have little experience or high time pressure therefore, the estimate is influenced.I don’t know enough about the requirements, so the size is a measure of my uncertainty.I know how to do it, so the size reflects my experience versus how complex the ask. However, even if detailed requirements are available, there are common concerns with absolute estimating. Absolute estimating may seem like a good approach when requirements are known, the environment is not complex, and the need is not urgent. Absolute estimating is the practice of applying an hourly, finite estimate to each requirement. A traditional or Waterfall software development lifecycle includes a long and detailed planning period to define requirements before beginning development.
